Itinerary

Visit the city of Angkor Thom: the Bayon, Baphuon, the Elephant Terrace and the Terrace of the Leper King, entering through the monumental south gate. The Bayon, state temple of Jayavarman VII, is one of the most enigmatic and powerful religious constructions in the world — a mass of face towers carved with four faces on each cardinal point.

Baphuon is a vast temple near the centre of Angkor Thom, with a huge reclining Buddha on its west side. The Elephant Terrace looks out over the Royal Square and marks the entrance to the Royal Palace. The Terrace of the Leper King dates to the reign of Jayavarman VII and can be explored from its earliest to most recent internal layers.

The temples of Angkor are among the grandest monuments ever constructed, covering approximately 164 sq miles with over 200 temples. Angkor Wat was conceived by Suryavarman II in the early 12th century and took an estimated 37 years to build; unlike most Khmer temples it faces west.

Phnom Bakheng, late 9th century, was the state temple of the first capital of Angkor and is the most popular sunset spot, with a magnificent view of Angkor Wat.

Banteay Srei, the “Citadel of Women”, was built not by kings but by Brahmin priests. Often called the Jewel of Khmer Art, its miniature scale and near-total surface decoration surprise every visitor. Banteay Samré is one of the most complete complexes at Angkor, restored by the archaeological method: complete deconstruction, numbering of every component, then painstaking reconstruction.

Ta Prohm, the Tomb Raider temple, has been consumed by the Cambodian jungle — strangler figs wrap around the stone in a way that is impossible not to be in awe of. Easily an hour of endless photo possibilities.

Preah Khan, built in the 12th century, was one of Jayavarman VII’s largest projects, dedicated to his father. With over 1,000 teachers it appears to have been a Buddhist university as well as a considerable city.

Neak Pean is a collection of five ponds in the middle of the Jayatataka reservoir — a 70 m square pond surrounded by four smaller ones. Ta Som is a small monastic complex with face tower gopuras; a huge tree grows from the top of the eastern gopura.
