Itinerary
- 08:30am — Phnom Kulen mountain range
Pick up from your hotel and transfer to Phnom Kulen National Park, north of Siem Reap. During the Angkor era the place was known as Mahendraparvata, and it was here in 802 that Jayavarman II proclaimed himself King of Kings — the founding act of the Khmer Empire. Craftsmen carved the Reclining Buddha in the Preah Ang Thom Pagoda: one of the largest reclining Buddhas in the world, cut directly into a mountain rock and uniquely reclining on the left side.
Next, the River of a Thousand Lingas and the spectacular Phnom Kulen waterfall, where you have the opportunity to take a very special bath. Lunch at a typical local restaurant in the area.
- Afternoon — Beng Mealea jungle temple
After lunch we drive one hour from Phnom Kulen through mountain and jungle scenery to the mysterious Beng Mealea temple.
Beng Mealea looks like it has just been discovered, with branches, roots, leaves and plants growing within its structure. Its style relates it to Angkor Wat, so experts date it to the beginning of the 12th century, during the reign of King Suryavarman II.
The temple is literally overgrown by jungle and has been intentionally kept that way. A wooden walkway makes the interior easy to access, and you can also visit the surrounding moat.
