Itinerary

Enter the city of Angkor Thom through the monumental south gate, along the avenue of Gods and Asuras lining the bridge across the moat. The Bayon, state temple of Jayavarman VII, is a unique mass of face towers creating a stone mountain of ascending peaks. Of the original 54 towers, 37 are still standing today.Baphuon is the vast temple near the centre of Angkor Thom, under France’s restoration project, with a huge reclining Buddha on the west side.

The Elephant Terrace is the heart of Angkor Thom, marking the entrance to the Royal Palace and the focal point for royal receptions; the elephant carvings along its walls give it its modern name. The Terrace of the Leper King is named after a 15th-century sculpture found on top of it, restored so visitors can walk inside the internal layers of the structure.Ta Prohm, built in the 12th century by Jayavarman VII and dedicated to the king’s mother, was left in its natural state, shrouded in the jungle.

The complex covers roughly 164 sq miles with over 200 temples; around 30 are accessible today. Angkor Wat, the largest religious building in the world, was conceived by Suryavarman II and took an estimated 37 years to build. Unlike most Khmer temples it faces west, most likely because it was dedicated to Vishnu.

Phnom Bakheng, late 9th century, was the state temple of the first capital of Angkor. Begin the ascent from the east side at the foot of the hill. The view from the top is magnificent, particularly of Angkor Wat to the south east — the most popular spot at sunset.
